Limousine
Regulations
Don’t
be taken for a bad ride. A flashy vehicle with cheap prices could spell trouble.
Know what to look for in a limousine company.
Michigan has a comprehensive limousine law (Public Act 271 of
1990) that is designed to protect you, the consumer.
A complete copy of the limousine law can be seen at “Michigan
Limousine Law.” 1.
Know the seating capacity of the limousine.
If the limousine is designed to carry more than 16 people,
including the driver, then the vehicle is considered a bus and has
special requirements for licensing and insurance.
See bus regulations below. 2.
Ask to see a copy of the companies liability insurance.
A limousine that can carry 1 to 9 passengers must have a minimum
of $1 million liability insurance.
Limousines that carry 10 to 15 people must have a minimum of $2
million in liability insurance. If
the vehicle can carry more than 16 people, it is considered a bus and
must carry $5 million in liability insurance. 3.
Ask to see a copy of the limousine drivers’ Motor Vehicle
Report (MVR). The driver
must carry a current copy of his/her MRV at all times and be able to
show consumer upon request. This
MVR will show if the driver has a chauffeur’s license and if they have
any driving offenses. Check here to find
out more about the MVR
Law. 4.
Check the current list of authorized limousine carriers in the
State of Michigan. If the
perspective limousine company does not appear on this list, ask the
limousine company if they are operating under an assumed name.
If not, call the state and verify the company is in compliance. 5. Finally, ask questions and check references. If you think your getting a deal that’s too good to be true, it probably is. Running a limousine company is very costly. Good operators will charge a fair price in order to cover expenses. |
