Bus Regulations

Michigan has a comprehensive bus law (Public Act 432 of 1982) to help protect the consumer.  Know the facts before you contract with a bus company.  A complete copy of the bus law can be seen at “Michigan Bus Law.”

1.    Is it at limousine or is it a bus?  If the vehicle is designed to carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver, it is considered a bus regardless of body style.

2.    Ask to see a copy of the bus companies liability insurance.  All bus operators must carry a minimum of $5 million liability insurance.

3.    Ask to see a copy of their certificate of authority issued by the State of Michigan.  All bus operators undergo an annual vehicle inspection.  After a successful inspection, the state will issue a certificate of authority.

4.    Ask for verification that the driver has a commercial drivers license with a passenger endorsement.  All bus drivers must comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations with respect to hours of service and carrying a valid Department of Transportation medical card.

5.   Check the current list of authorized bus carriers registered in the State of Michigan.  If the perspective company does not appear on this list, ask the bus company if they are operating under an assumed name.  If not, call the state and verify the company is in compliance.

6.    Finally, ask questions and check references.  If you think your getting a deal that’s too good to be true, it probably is.  Running a bus company is very costly.  Good operators will charge a fair price in order to cover expenses.
